POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Community Bridger program is operated by Advocacy Unlimited, Inc. (AU). AU is a Connecticut-based nonprofit that offers education, advocacy, and support related to individual growth, human rights, and systems transformation in the areas of mental health and addiction. The position of Community Bridger operates out of the AU New Britain Office, and is expected to travel statewide to offer support to people aged eighteen or older who are currently involved or at risk for being involved in the criminal justice or probate court system. Those working in the Bridger role strive to build trusting relationships, support people from the perspective of personal experience with a psychiatric diagnosis and/or substance use, and facilitate connection to community opportunities. Peer Bridgers are not expected to be members of a treatment team nor take on the role of case management or crisis workers. Bridgers offer genuine support that is not limited to any particular setting or length of time. Important skills and attributes applicants should bring to this position are cross-cultural competence, situational awareness, open-mindedness, extraversion/social intelligence, high-level communication skills, a sense of humor, and unlimited patience.
