Mission & History

Advocacy Unlimited, Inc. is a Connecticut based non-profit organization that provides holistic, peer led recovery resources.

We know that it is imperative that all people, regardless of socio-economic or psychiatric history, have access to services that center recovery-orientation, cultural humility, personal agency, choice, informed consent, gender-affirming, trauma responsive, and practices that center the person.

We promote the vision that every person – regardless of socio-economic status, psychiatric, addiction, or trauma history – has the inner capacity to recover their full potential and create a life of self-defined purpose.

Core to our approach is working with the intention to co-create transformational space where folks regain a sense of connection to themselves, others, and the broader community. We know that people recover in community, and when multiple pathways are supported through flexible and responsive resources.

Together, we are co-creating those spaces and providing holistic, peer led recovery resources to folks across Connecticut.

Mission

We provide holistic, peer led education, advocacy, and support services in the areas of mental health, addiction, and trauma recovery.

History

Advocacy Unlimited promotes the civil and human rights of people affected by psychiatry, and institutional services.

Started in 1994 as the Community Advocacy Education Division (CAED), a branch of Connecticut Legal Rights Project (CLRP), we became independently incorporated in the spring of 1998 and were renamed Advocacy Unlimited, Inc. While its original vision remained unchanged – to support people to achieve lives rich in texture and meaning – our programs and offerings have expanded significantly over the years.

Over the past 30 years, AU remained innovative as we’ve grown from a small mental health rights initiative into a nationally recognized non-profit organization that reaches over 8,000 community members annually through holistic, non-clinical and holistic engagement.
